Remolding a home the floor needs help
l am remolding a bedroom in a old house. l pulled up some old carpet in one
of the bedroom. The floor underneath is hardwood but the cushion from the
carpet is stuck to it. How do l get that pad off the floor? The padding is
so old it is rotting away but the floor seems to be in good shape.
That is always a great find, ya gotta love a wooden floor.
The pad was more than likely put down with glue so you really have two
real good options.
1. You could sand the floor down & put a new coat of stain on it, or you
can use lacquer thinner. Lacquer thinner is a solvent solution that breaks down the essential properties of paints & varnishes, lacquer, shellac, oils, grease & adhesive residues. The trick is just lightly dampen the rug. If you use to much you will remove the old stain & you will have no choice but to sand the whole floor & re-stain. Good Luck!
I would either call a carpet installer and ask them..or go to
home depot and ask them.
My grandson does this type of removal.but not from hardwood floors..he
does it in commercial buildings..usually on top of cement.
They sometimes use ice scrapers with long handles.or putty knives..but you
cant do that on a hardwood floor.because it will scratch.
use a scraper and if this works you will still have to sand and
refinish or rent a drum sander from your local rental yard but be sure they
carry 4-8 grit paper some rental places rent the sander but only go down to
36 grit,thus making you use more sand paper which they will gladly sell you
at a profit and you will need to rent the machine 3-4 times as long
