I would toss the carpet and paint the floor with an odor

blocking primer. If there is still urine these will prevent any further

odor. Too much money to do a half fast job.

You can usually tell by the smell. I have a very picky nose &

when we moved into a new home that had carpet & flooring with pet stains &

odors we wound up stripping it down to the sub floor, cleaning it, painting

it, & then replaced everything over it. The dog that made these stains was

huge, so all the stains really penetrated through everything. So a small

pet may not have penetrated the sub floor. We just sort of winged it as
we'd never dealt with this problem before. The previous owners of our
home were smokers so I don't know if that exacerbated the smell. If I
were in ur shoes I would definitely smell the sub floor, I don't think it
would hurt it to have a cleaning. I would also smell the carpet, really
smell it. You may want to replace it as well. The last thing you want to
do is work hard & spend money & discover you have to do it all over again.

If the pet urine has gone through to the sub floor chances are

the smell will remain despite changing the carpet pad. To treat the sub

floor use a white pigmented shellac primer. They carry this at Sherwin

Williams. Another brand name is called Bins. At any rate you are looking

for a shellac based primer. This will seal in those smells. If you cannot

find this, you can use an oil based primer. It would be the second best
option.

**Note: If you are in a state that regulates oil paints & stains (such as
ohio or California) you may have trouble finding some of these products. I
know in Ohio, which is a regulated state we carry oil primers & the shellac
primer but not oil paints. If for some reason you absolutely cannot find an
oil-- you can try a latex. It might seal some of the smells. **

As far as the carpet, I am not as familiar with that topic. Something
tells me it might still have an odor (especially if it can urine!!). If
you want to be safe, they sell a product called Nature is Miracle at
PetSmart & probably other pet stores. It has enzymes that break down pet
stains, & especially urine.

Good Luck!!!!
